German Vexillological Society

XXII.
International Congress
of
Vexillology
2007
Berlin

The Venue
Berlin, the capital of the united Germany, in the
heart of
Europe, is connecting the East and the West.
Even though the city is over 750 years old, Berlin is a young and
attractive
European metropolis.
The congress will be held at the site of the German Historical Museum in the "Zeughaus" (the Arsenal, between 1695-1706).

Here you find a collection of more than 2000 flags,
the
largest of its kind in Germany,
with exceptional pieces, banners and standards dating back to the 17th
century.
Organization and Costs
In planning the congress, it is our aim to give
participants
the possibility to either register and book for sessions only,
and/or additionally for the congress report, the excursion and
reception.
Thus it will be at the discretion of the delegates to keep their costs
at a
desirable and tolerable level.

The Hosts
The German Historical Museum
as co-host was founded in 1987 by the Federal Republic of Germany and
the Land
Berlin.
The "Zeughaus" (the Arsenal) is the oldest building located on the
avenue Unter den Linden.
It is one of most beautiful secular buildings of the Baroque period in
northern
Germany
and owes its special place in art history to the high quality of its
sculptural
works.
The host of the congress, the German
Vexillological Society, was established in 1995
and is now the meeting point for the flag enthusiasts in Germany.
The society issues - in colour - the well known "Flaggenkurier"
publication,
unites more than 100 members and cooperation partners,
and forms an excellent basis for all kinds of scientific study on flags.

On the occasion of the 12th Meeting
of German Vexillologists held on October 11-12, 2003 in Kassel, Gerd Vehres reported in his function as Head of the
Preparatory Committee.
The congress will be co-hosted by the DGF and the German Historical Museum (DHM). The conference rooms will be furnished by the DHM, which will also arrange an accompanying exhibition. The congressional theme is fixed as "Colours in history - Flaggen and Fahnen, their use and presentation". An illustrated catalogue will reproduce flags from the DHM inventory. The congress is to be scheduled on August 6-10, 2007. A students project will be included to prepare, organize and rework the venue. They might be students at the "Kunsthochschule Hanns Eisler", Berlin. According to Mr. Vehres the further steps are a competition for the congress flag and logo, a draft of the flag exhibition and the winning of sponsors. Mr. Vehres asked the DGF members to reconsider how they could contribute to the preparation of the congress and which lectures they might held. |
The "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Flaggenkunde e. V." launches a competition to create the congress flag. Everybody may participate. Some examples of congress flags were reproduced in Appendix B, June 2001 of the "Flaggenkurier".
The congress flag shall include the subsequent elements:
1. National reference to the German colours black, red, and yellow
2. Reference to the FIAV like the vexillological knot or a V for
"vexillology"
3. Local reference to Berlin (bear of Berlin)
You find the stand of the inquiry of a favorite here.
Moreover we are looking for flags with bear motives.
Please give your hints to Gerd Vehres. Thanks a lot!
